sleeping at a relative's home. kim berry terry is live at san francisco general hospital where the girl is being treated. >> reporter: the uncle of the 11-year-old says an ambulance came quickly as soon as he brought his niece here to san francisco general hospital where as you said, she is listed in critical but stable condition. her uncle says she was shot in the chest area, close to her shoulder and the bullet hit close to her lung. the shooting happened at about 11:15 last night in the city's western edition neighborhood. a group of men were arguing when one of them pulled out a gun and started firing. one of the bullets went into an apartment striking a girl who was there for a sleepover with her cousin. the uncle heard six to seven shots. then liz niece came unite and said she had been shot.

>> is it went through her shoulder and exited her and went through the wall. >> reporter: his niece was alert but scared waiting for the plans to arrive. police detained three people overnight for questioning. we heard they arrested two of them. the suspects are 18 and 19-year-old males. their names have not been released. the gang task force is the invest gative body in this case. if you have any information about last night's shooting, caught san francisco police. live in san francisco, kimberly >> ondng in o lndngkiooak f loo suspects tonight. gunfire erupted in seven different neighborhoods around the city. sending at least six people to the hospital. you can see most of the shootings were just within a few miles of each other. officers have one suspect in custody, and are still looking for suspects in the six other incidents. a man arrested for the 1983

rape and murder of a campbell teenager has been linked to another cold case. the case was recently reopened by the santa clara county cold case unit. authorities say he is linked to a murder and attempted rape. holland is already in jail awaiting trial for the 1983 rape and murder of 17-year-old cynthia munoz of campbell. if convicted he could be eligible for the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole. he's being held without bail. the fatal shooting of a knife wielding man will soon receive scrutiny. the committee will review the july 3rd shooting when it meets on monday. you're looking at surveillance video of the shooting released

on thursday. 45-year-old charles hill was shot and killed after he attacked officers with a knife and an open bottle. firefighters in southern california are battling a large wildfire this evening. the eagle fire is burning in northeastern san diego county on the indian reservation. so far the fire has burned 4,000 acres of thick brush. firefighters have the fire 30% con takened. but say steep and rugged terrain is making things difficult. no buildings are threatened. the fire started on thursday, but investigators are not sure how. airline passengers are supposed to get a tax break on air fair today. airlines are not letting you slide. several federal taxes on airline taxes expired at midnight this morning, to offset the tax savings, usairways and american airlines raised their fairs. the taxes added up to $25 or more on a typical $300 round

trip ticket. they expired because congress failed to pass legislation to keep the federal aviation administration running. other airlines have not raised their prices. president obama and top lawmakers are working this weekend. the deadline for a debt limit deal is looming and no compromise yet in sight. both sides say the debt ceiling will be raised before august 2nd, even though know where can really say how. >> reporter: it was 100 degrees outside and inside the white house president obama and congressional leaders were feeling the heat. they met for about an hour on saturday, but walked away without a plan to raise the nation's debt ceiling. the deadline is just 10 days away. each side seems confident of a resolution. >> we need an approach that asks everybody to do their part. >> reporter: the talks between president obama and house speaker john boehner imploded on friday, and neither did much to

hide their frustration. >> i've been left at the altar now a couple times. one of the questions that the republican party is going to have to ask itself, can they say yes to anything? >> the white house moved the goal post. there was an agreement on some additional revenues. until yesterday, when the president demanded $400 billion more. >> reporter: president obama still wants a grand plan, but says he'll sign off on a deal that raises the debt ceiling until 2013. house speaker boehner says he won't sign off on any plan that doesn't pay for the debt ceiling increase. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. local governments throughout the bay area are cracking down on payday loans. the loans that can carry annual interest rates as high as 459%. according to the silicon valley community foundation, an average borrower pays $500 in interest on a $300 loan.

the city council passed a moratorium prohibiting new pay day loan stores from opening. if your saturday night plans take you through the south bay on highway 101, you may be rerouted. at midnight, drivers will be detoured on to surface streets. crews ll work on the shutdown highway until it reopens at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. same story sunday night, except the work will stop around 5:00 monday morning in time for the morning commute. the construction is aimed at easing congestion, the work has been going on since thursday night. next at 6:00, a hollywood starlet best known for her work with james bond dies. details coming up. the investigation into the sudden death of a well known pop star. and geico saving you money, but only because the state ordered them to do so. exewl 'lplain when the news at 6:00 returnings. l

a nation in mourning. people gathered all over norway and the world to pay tribute to the victims of friday's massacre. people continue to lay flowers and light candles at the memorial. at least 92 people are confirmed dead and that number may gray. many people in norway say it is hard to deal with the shock. >> i didn't think it was going to happen. i thought i was safe.

it was a safe country. but it looks like it's difficult to -- never know when you're safe any more. >> people are also setting flowers outside the norwegian embassy in washington, d.c.. the 3-year-old anders breivik is responsible. they think he used a bomb like that in the oklahoma city bombings. amy winehouse has died. she became as well known for her troubles with drugs and alcohol as she was for her music. last month, she cancelled her european comeback tour after she slurred her way through one of her shows. she grabbed international headlines in 2007 in a stand-off with her family about going to rehab. linda christian was a

hollywood starlet in the 1940s who starred as bond's love interest in "casino royale." she died yesterday in palm desert after battling colon cancer, she was 87 years old. the heat wave that has gripped the midwest section of the country continued today. at least 22 people have died due to heat related illnesses. temperatures topping 100 degrees along with high humidity had families in new york, racing to the beaches. now, in pittsburgh firefighters had to use wet towels to try to stay cool on the job. and in the nation's capital, the heat index topd 112. something that hasn't happened in more than a decade. >> it's too much. it's entirely too hot. what are you going to did? you just have to deal with it. >> forecasters are predicting a cool front that should provide some relief. over the next couple days, temperatures could be back in

turns out geico can save you money on insurance. though perhaps not the way the commercials intend. the state is ordering the insurance company cut its auto rates 10.7%. the department of insurance ordered the decrease after the nonprofit consumer watchdog group accused the company of improperly estimating future claims. more than 700,000 california policyholders will see savings totalling $91 million. the new rates go into effect august 15th. it's hard to believe that ski season is still going on in the sierra. boreal was open for skiers and snow borders. they opened one run and one terrain park. this video was shot thursday as the resort got the slope ready for visitors. mammoth mountain was open on august 13th back in 1995.

rob mayeda remembers it well. you were skiing that day? >> tumbling down the hill, perhaps. they have the sunshine and shorts enjoying the snow. around the bay area today. comfortably cool, we had a good strong sea breeze keeping our temperature in check. the hottest place around the alma den valley. this is a very good snapshot of our south bay micro climates. only 80 in san jose, 65 in san francisco. 70s across the inner north bay valley, thanks to the fact the sea breeze was coming up out of the south. 74 degrees over in oakland 66. and a cool evening in san francisco, currently 62 degrees, you can see the low clouds spreading back across the bay. temperatures around the bay area. mid-70s inland. 62 at santa cruz, can you see a healthy sea breeze. not only bringing in the low clouds, good for air quality. this is stellar for this time of year, to see nothing but green on the map. often times we have spare the air days, not the case on the

strong sea breeze. you can see the sea breeze dropping the clouds inland. across the west coast we have high pressure keeping things mostly clear, we're going to take you further south. we had an almost category 5 hurricane dora which is now weakening. notice the storm plots here. what's left of the low is going to drift closer to southern california. there's a lot of cold sea surface temperatures here. where the moisture goes can be a problem for fire weather. we have to watch out for the thunderstorms and where the moisture streams off this thing. it looks like most of it will stay off of yosemite. no real impacts on the bay area to wrap up the weekend. around the bay area, you'll notice low clouds surging inland again. high temperatures as we wrap up the weekend looked a lot like today, places like morgan hill and areas south of san jose should be in the 80s, low 70s as you get further north from palo

alto up to redwood city. pretty comfortable temperatures. mid-60s for san francisco. highs again pretty cleese to 70 degrees. 80s inland around concord and pittsburgh. winds unite of the south, places like santa rosa and sonoma. mid to upper 80s around lake port. thanks to a stronger sea breeze as we get back to the workweek. we try to drop down in the temperatures. next weekend we can see a sizable ridge of high pressure build in. if that happens, it's been a while since we've been talking about the 90s. we could get there. >> if you want to know where hurricane dora is going, you need to check the map. >> internet explorer perhaps? >> for those of you with three and four-year-olds, that's the trick. with the shuttle program now scrapped, people in alameda took a moment to remember a bit of space history. the uss hornet is home to the

apollo capsule and quarantine trailer that carried the astronauts to the moon and back 42 years ago today. they tried to make the famous ship come alive for the public. they got a chance to meet the former crew. today's celebrations also cone sided with the return of the final space shuttle mission which ended just a couple days ago. gourmet food for a good cause. top chefs from around the bay area gathered in the east bay today to share their favorite dishes for charity. >> bbq pork, cilantro slaw and ground peanuts. >> 40 different bay area restaurants were represented. and six top chefs battled it out in a cooking competition. the money made from the day's festivities goes to the st. vincent church of oakland. >> you know, you are never sure

hundreds of people walked and rolled down north first street in san jose today as part of the second annual disability pride parade. organizers say over 1,000 people with disabilities, activists and community members showed up to support disability pride. >> a lot of people think that

disability is a tragedy or a barrier to be overcome. but we're here today to say that people with disabilities are beautiful just the way we are. we don't need to be cured, fixed, cleaned or anything else. we are disables, proud and beautiful. >> the parade honored three grand marshalls for their contribution to advancing disability rights in the bay area. a 20-foot tall puppet took part honoring the late justin dart. let's check in with henry wofford with a look at the giants game coming up. henry? >> i'll tell you what, speaking of baseball. they say you can't hit what you can't see. we have a group of guys that are not willing to prove that's not always the case. hang with us. we'll show you what beat ball is all about.

area. i'm henry wofford. right now in stockton, there's a very rare baseball team defying some significant odds. the game they play is the deception to those of us who can see. but as brody brazil reports, their way does a whole lot of good. >> ready, hit. >> they hit, run and field in what looks like our national pastime. howev however, it's very different. >> some people do think it's amazing. i like it when they think it's not so amazing and get to know us a little better. >> all the stingrays are legally blind. playing this modified version of a familiar game. hitting a baseball is already considered as the toughest thing to do in all of sports. so you can only imagine the challenge of simply making

contact with this spehr, one you cannot see but can hear. >> it's pretty tough. >> you have to do a consistent swing so the pitch ever can get the idea where you're swinging at the moment. it's a little bit of a matter of concentration. >> it's more than us chasing the sound of the ball. it's all about timing, he's on our team, trying to help us put the ball into play. >> it's a very difficult thing, but once you hit it, it's exciting, you run out to the base and try to make it for dear life. >> speaking of life. this experience is bringing teammates together in a way only sports can. >> i think it helps a lot. it builds camaraderie. >> i've seen so many people blossom in our program that were so shy and reserved. i know beep ball helps people physically and emotionally. anybody that comes out is tou touched by our sport and helps us all. >> in stockton, nbc bay area

minnesota tops the tigers, 4-1 is your final. how about the padres taking on the phillies who have the best record in baseball? bottom of the first, two on for chase utley, go and chase this shot. opposite field blast, 3-0 phillies, padres down 3-2 in the sixth inning, chase hedley ties it. man, there were a lot of home runs today. we are tied at 3. to the 7th inning, all phillies after that, chase utley. second homer of the day giving the phillies and 8-4 lead, they go on to win 8-6 is your final. one more game for you, braves and reds from cincinnati, sixth inning, reds down 2-1. runners on the corners. edgar renteria doubles down the left field line. we have a play coming up at the plate. drew stubbs oh, my goodness takes one to the chin. but he's safe. 3-2 reds.
